The main one that comes to mind is the Titanic-Olympic switch. This is more detailed in the book by Robin Gardiner. The ship that never sank. It is a very interesting read.

I wouldn't read it.Since the Olympic was different in a few ways. They would of been able to tell if it was the Olympic instead of the Titanic.

As Titanic was nearing completion, Olympic was in a serious collision with HMS Hawke. This left a gaping hole in Olympics side. Around this same time, as Olympic was in for repairs, the two sisters were almost identical. Whilst Olympic was in the dock, Titanic had many major distinguishing features added, such as the enclosed promenade deck. As White Star Line was supposedly suffering from a cash-flow problem around this time, a decision was made to switch identities of the two ships and send Olympic, complete with weak hull, on its 'maiden' voyage under the name Titanic. They could sink 'Titanic' an probably save the lives of all on board as many ships would be in the area at the time. Maybe this is why iceberg warnings were ignored?
JP Morgan, the owner of the WSL, was supposed to sail this evening, but pulled out through illness.
Because of the bad design of the bulheads, Titanic sank very quickly and some of the nearby ships were trapped in ice, like the Californian.
The location given at the time of the sinking was many miles out from where the wreck was located, was this deliberate.
All in all, this book does make some interesting observations and really does make you think.

That theory was debunked on an expedition a few years ago, the numbers on the propellers were an exact match to the Titanic, not the Olympic.

They both had 3 propellors, Titanics propellors were numbered 401, if I recall. Olympics were 400. There is a picture of Titanic propellor on the ocean floor, number 401.
I dont think that a propellor switch was impossible though.
I dont believe the theory myself, but it is an interesting one
